Quadrilateral Family Tree
This is a unit plan for the study of the quadrilaterals that include definitions, properties, pictures, and assessment. Student engagement is enhanced with caricatures of each of the quadrilaterals.
Geometry
Polyominoes
This lesson goes through the definitions and the creation of the polyominoes up to the discussion of the pentominoes. Students use flips, slides, and rotations to create the polyominoes
Puzzling Polygons
A SMART board lesson adapted from a free AIMS activity. Use flip, slides, and rotations to combine the five pieces to form Parallelograms, Rectangles, Trapezoids, and Triangles
Subdivisions Inc.
A problem solving activity with the use of flips, slides, and rotations to created a symmetrical street layout for your subdivision. Black line masters included for classroom set of materials.
Making Tangrams
Measuring lengths to find midpoints and following directions make this a nice hands-on activity with the end product being each student has their own set of Tangrams.
Hot Wheels Racing
Use flips, slides, and rotations along with symmetry in this fun, problem solving activity to create a continuous hot wheels track with the six different track components
Memory Game
Play the memory game with various geometric shapes. Uses triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons/
Motion Man
Learn flips, slides, and rotations as you go through the pages with this lesson on Motion Man. Student pages included.
On a Roll
Roll the dice, plat the points, block your opponent, and be the first to get four in a row. Excellent problem solving game for graphing points in the first quadrant.
Cartesian Coordinate Planes
A series of slides that contain 1, 2, 4, 6 or 9 planes on a single page. Great for printing for student seat work.
Area on a Geoboard
Some very interesting geometric problems arise on each of the different Vanishing Geometry
pages in this lesson.
Area Perimeter Volume
These are diagrams of 2D and 3D shapes that are with the 8th Grade Standards for Virginia but can be used by all. Click on an object and it takes you to the page for the formula for area or volume
Geometric Solids
A lesson on 3-D shapes that include pictures, definitions, properties, and nets of the 3-D shapes shown above.
Triangle Family Portrait
An engaging, interactive lesson on naming and classify triangles by their angles and/or their sides. Lots of opportunities for discussion and questioning.
Tangrams
Use the seven colored tangram pieces to create several of the included tangram puzzles. A page is included for students to make other tangram shapes from other sources.
The Shadow Knows
A new lesson on the 2D shadow that is cast by a 3D shape. An intriguing Challenge awaits an the end of the lesson.
Geometry Vocab LAT
This lesson contains several Lesson Activity Toolkit activities that deal with Geometry Shapes, formulas, and vocabulary
Teaching geometric concepts should enable all students to analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes, specify locations and describe spatial relationships using coordinate geometry, apply transformations and symmetry to analyze mathematical situations and use visualization, spatial reasoning, and geometric modeling to solve problems.
